A day trip I took awhile back was to the Prophetstown, Illinois, State
Recreation area. We headed out on a cool but sunny Saturday, heading East on Hwy
30 to Clinton. We crossed the river and went to Morrison, Illinois, then headed
South on Hwy 78.
When you're in Morrison, make sure you accidentally miss Hwy 78 South, and go
East another block, or so, on Hwy 30. Some people there in Morrison have the
most interesting spread of yard ornaments you've ever seen! Make sure you turn
around and go down their alley to see the back yard too!
Anyway, go back to Hwy 78 South, and head to Prophetstown. The park is on the
East side of town. It's on the Rock River. You can picnic, fish, camp,
hike...whatever. We just enjoyed our time sitting by the river, cooking up some
grub.
Just down the road is Kewanee, with the oldest H-D dealership in Illinois. Pass
on the furniture store (you know which one) and instead opt for a burger at the
tavern around the corner. The copper ceilings and enormous antique back bar are
worth a look-see.
